Follies of the Accidental Megastructure (excerpt)

Coined by design theorist Benjamin Bratton, the term Accidental Megastructure is used to describe an emergent planetary-scale condition comprised of the dialogue between technological apparatuses and geopolitical systems that are made manifest by “different genres of computation—smart grids, cloud platforms, mobile apps, smart cities, the Internet of Things, automation.” In his book The Stack, Bratton discusses the different layers of this emergent condition the ways in which “the larger whole built from hard and soft systems intermingling…” impacts us all on a daily basis. We are as entwined with this Accidental Megastructure as it is entwined with us.

This project is a foray into documenting our contemporary lived condition within this Accidental Megastructure, where it hits the literal ground.
